A collaboration with Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield Young Offenders and Asha Munn. The project was created for a very small and select group of identified, creative young offenders. The pilot project involved challenging the group to create at least 3 large scale artworks to reflect the theme of 'my town'
The 'immediacy' of photography keeps the momentum of projects going ensuring quick impressive and achievable results making it also especially suitable for people who may only focus for a short period of time. The project encourages the young people involved to use the still image to communicate with their audience about how they see where they live. It is up to them if they portray this is a negative or positive light. Each young person will be entrusted with a camera and asked to act as a recorder to tell us about their town in their own right. The idea is that they document a part of their own life as only they know it – giving them the power to be seen and represent themselves. Thereby challenging the control of those who may choose to portray the young people in a negative light. Hopefully they can start to see that they can control how they are seen.
The digital art works will be on display in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Centre Upper Space from 8th August for one week before touring to other galleries in the region.
